TERRADILLOS DE LOS TEMPLARIOS

TERRADILLOS OF TEMPLARIOS is a Castilian village located in the boundaries of the provinces of León and Palencia. Its name comes from the “roof” (elevated area) place name.

The village is located in a single promontory on the N-120 road up the first houses of the town offering a slight elevation that dominates the horizon. Hence the name of Terradillos.

The story takes us back-in the late Roman period in the peninsula (VI century after J.C..) – A settlement (small Roman villa) in the style of La Olmeda and Quintanilla, but with almost no historical value and greater poverty. In Cueza river near the ground it is documented the existence of this rustic Roman villa. Certainly this land was dominated by the Romans and place names peoples (Quintanilla, Calzadilla, we speak of their domination in the Castilian plateau).

The Middle Ages brings the spread of devotions, pilgrimages and processions … Terradillos part of the Camino de Santiago: the real French Way passes through the village. Along the so-called Templar existed in the twelfth century a hostel for pilgrims, bearing the name of San Juan, guarded by the Knights Templar. Today it is completely demolished and only some stones and burial grounds attest to its existence. Pilgrimages have been happening continuously throughout the centuries. In recent years especially significant.
