RABÉ DE LAS CALZADAS

Rabe de las Calzadas not called always so, until recent times has not taken the name that today takes. The name of Rabe de las Calzadas origin is unknown for now.

There are several theories that attempt to give rise to the name, from which they say comes from Rabbi (which means, in Judaism, “teacher” to exist in the village a Jewish colony before the expulsion of the Moors from Spain) until they say it means Ribera and even Fortaleza. The most credible of all is the holding Fray Justo Perez de Urbel and supported by Santiago Barquín Tobar and Luis Martinez Pardo who say the name of Rabe has its origin in the same medieval repopulation of these lands, and it may be the name of who repopulated these lands or be the name of the place where he was born or lived. The first time the name of Rabe appears in history dates back to the year 946 of our era but the name appears only and does not carry the “de las Calzadas”. The adjective “of the Roadways” comes from the Roman era and it was not one but several that crossed the municipality of our people. Here passed the fifth way that reached Clunia.

Deobrigula means “city of the gods” and was an important Roman city that, according to some, was located in Tardajos, and according to others, Rabe.

In the case that had been located at the end of Rabé it is quite possible that does not match the current location of the village houses. In any case hard to pinpoint its location by the lack of documents, but still documents that mention the place in the term of Rabe, as proved by L. Huidobro.

Near the village in the term known as the “fridge” there was a castle that protected its inhabitants at the time of the Reconquista. There are several documents that testify to the existence of the castle. Don Ramon Pardo confirms this in his writings to elaborate on the “topographical position of the town: its limits and antiques”. L. Huidobro mentions the castle to speak of one of its illustrious residents “Don Luis Osorio de Acuña,” which we will mention later. mention is also made in the testament of Isabel the Catholic and specifically the clause that reads: “otrosí command then see the right of the Bishop of Burgos to the strength of Rabe”.

Today nothing remains of the castle and even the apparent pit has been destroyed pretending to make a property more suitable for agricultural mechanization. The importance of the castle of Rabe comes because he took refuge Don Luis Osorio de Acuña, bishop of Burgos, because being this supporter of Juana la Beltraneja, and be besieged Burgos by the armies of King Ferdinand in May 1475 took refuge Rabe, where he harassed the faithful to Isabella Burgos.

The medieval town of Rabe, defended by the castle, had three basilicas or churches. This is reflected in the Cartulario of Cardena, in the year 949. In that Cartulario is said that a marriage and his brother priest, made a donation to the basilicas of Santa Maria, San Martin and San Juan de Rabé. Of these there are no remains today. Perhaps one of them is the old church, which was demolished, at least in part, when the current rose in times of Don Baldemoro Pampliega.

At the entrance of the village, as Tardajos it comes from and opposite the school building erected by Don Baldemoro Pampliega between 1882-1884 the Palace stands. Palace was the Count of Villariezo in the seventeenth century. Don Ramon Pardo says it must have been built in the early seventeenth century.
