LA VIRGEN DEL CAMINO
In the sixteenth century, the people of the Virgen del Camino was an unpopulated hill, flowering thyme, just crossed it slowly some shepherds leading their flocks.
The site of the apparition, was a place of village FRESNO happened to be called from that moment, FRESNO AND THE HERMITAGE, which in turn belonged to the COUNCIL OF THE Valdoncina, which consisted of what are now the municipalities of santovenia de la valdoncina, VALVERDE VIRGIN AND WHAT WAS tHE CITY oF Armunia, until joining the city of Leon, Oteruelo oF Valdoncina, Armunia AND tHE CERECEDO TROBAJO.
Alvar Simón Gómez Fernández, citizen and native of Velilla de la Reina and who liked to bring here his flock, and one day while tending his sheep appeared in the midst of this wide field image of Our Lady surrounded by unique light and clear blazes, was the July 2, 1505, as we all know as the HUMILLADERO.
According to tradition in the place where he fell the stone thrown by Our Lady with wave pastor, is the place where the shrine, on the stone rises, the picture that falling wave grew so happened despite many pounds .
Three Shrines preceded the current, Prime sanctuary or chapel was built between 1514 and 1516, it was opened for worship and lasted until 1644, after toppling in 1644 he begins to build the second Shrine being finished the Chapel and the altarpiece in 1652, but before being completed in 1662 collapses, to build the third shrine that remained standing until 1958, year in which work began today SANCTUARY, and fourth, designed by the architect Dominico P. Coello de Portugal, with sculptures the facade and the gates of Sanctuary work of Catalan architect Subirachs, the architect of the Cathedral of Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia.
La Virgen del Camino, is patron of the Leonine Town since 1738, as reflected in a Royal Decree, and was officially proclaimed the year 1914, PATRON OF LAND LEONESAS, by Pope Pius X.
In 1927, OUR LADY OF THE WAY, FRESNO segregates ROAD, PEOPLE GOING TO BE A SEPARATE YOUR OWN NEIGHBORHOOD BOARD, AND WITHIN THE MUNICIPALITY OF VALVERDE DE LA VIRGEN.
In 2005, the 2 July the 500th anniversary of the apparition of the Virgin ROAD was held, where the City of Valverde de la Virgen, along with the municipalities of the vote, Bishop of Leon, Provincial and Regional Institutions and ALL PEOPLE OF THE VIRGIN ROAD aND MUNICIPALITY, scheduled cultural activities, TRADITIONAL aND dEVOTION TO THE PATRON OF ALL LEONESES.
FOUR Sanctuaries
Prior to the current sanctuary, three were erected in the same place. The first chapel or sanctuary was built between 1514 and 1516 when the cult was opened and lasted until 1664. After toppling the first chapel in 1644, it begins to build the second church or shrine, ending the chapel and the altarpiece in 1652 . But before it is completely finished the work the church collapses in 1662 and two years later began work on the third sanctuary, which remained standing until 1958.
THE HUMILLADERO
It is the time of the appearance, if not later. The tradition insists that the Virgin appeared in Humilladero, it’s what they told the mischievous Justina in the early seventeenth century: “Look, Mrs. Justina, what we call the Calvary is a small chapel, where the Virgin he appeared to a humble shepherd, and he, humiliated, adored, and made humble prayer. And so, and that there will humble themselves and to the Holy image, it is called the calvary ”
