MONUMENTS
Church of the XII century with a single nave, follows the typical constructive scheme of the churches in the mountain areas of the province of Lugo, barely outside and ornaments made by slate. The presbytery has a triumphal arch and barrel vault. In the facade there is a tower, whose bottom a porch with four masonry pillars and four means bays point lies. The porch could serve to welcome travelers, being the place to shelter from inclement weather.
Quite possibly the villa is located on a primitive pre-Roman settlement. By the ninth century there begins to emerge a refuge for pilgrims, although it was not until 1072 when Alfonso VI ordered to build a hospital there, which will be run by the monks of the Abbey of St. Gerard d’Aurillac. From this fact begins its peak, welcoming large numbers of pilgrims, which provides physical and spiritual assistance. Later this abbey is adjoined to Cluny, going from 1487 to depend on the Benedictines of Valladolid. Finally, the monks are expelled from the place in 1854 due to the Confiscation.
It is said that in the locality a miraculous event took place in the fourteenth century. A neighbor of nearby Barxamaior has reached out to O Cebreiro to hear Mass, braving heavy snow. The officiant, a monk of Aurillac who is said that should not be very devoted, questioned the sacrifice of the farmer, saying, “what is this other with such great storm, and weary, to see a bit of bread and wine “.. the miracle happened when he was proceeding to the consecration, becoming the host into flesh and wine into blood. In 1486 the town passed through the Catholic Monarchs who, Serles reported the miracle, the temple offer a reliquary, which is currently on display in the church with the miraculous chalice.
