CACABELOS

Located in the province of Leon, in the heart of the Bierzo and bathed by the waters of the river Cua, the oldest on the settlement of Cacabelos data date back to the Palaeolithic, through all stages, being the Castro de la Ventosa one of the most representative examples of the Celtic culture and pre-Roman settlements.

The intense process of Romanization of the region is perfectly reflected in the appearance of Bergidum Flavium, city some place on the plain, up to the present cemetery, today called archaeological site of Edrada. Bergidum was the administrative center of the numerous gold deposits that the Romans exploited in the Bierzo. Cacabelos name was first mentioned in the S.X in the donation of Bermudo II to the Monastery of Carracedo.

Cacabelos was the scene of a major battle in which in the early days of January 1809, they faced English and French, in the Mayor bridge struggles developed and General Colbert would find his death.

As examples of religious architecture in Cacabelos is: The Church of Our Lady of the Plaza or St. Mary’s Church in the center of the town. In the street of Santa Maria is the Hermitage of San Roque. At one end of the village the Sanctuary of the V Anguish.
